Dr. Marianne Nuzzo from IGI to present a poster at the “Application of Analytical Techniques to Petroleum Systems Problems” Conference

Noble and hydrocarbon gases in seafloor seeps surveys of frontier hydrocarbon provinces

Dr. Marianne Nuzzo from IGI Ltd is to present a poster on:

“Hydrocarbon and noble gas geochemical survey in a mud volcano province: Insights into oil-water-gas interactions and gas hydrate occurrences in the subsurface”.

This will be presented at the “Application of Analytical Techniques to Petroleum Systems Problems” conference at the Geological Society, Burlington House, London, on the 28th February and 1st March 2017.

The poster records and interprets the results of an extensive survey of the hydrocarbon and noble gas geochemistry of mud volcano fluids. This provides information on the migration of hydrocarbons in the deep sub-surface and suggests the desorption of large amounts of hydrocarbons in the tectonically active region of the “Gulf of Cadiz” (SW Iberia and NW Morocco). These data are also indicative of the presence (absence) of gas hydrates in the sediments and can place limits on their stability and the extent to which gas hydrate dissociation is sourcing seepage at the seafloor. Moreover, a combined hydrocarbon and noble gas data interpretation gives insights into the presence of oil at depth and proves an efficient screening tool for sea bed surveys.
